Newcastle University approves Newcastle Centre for AI Safety

Newcastle University has formally approved the establishment of the Newcastle Centre for AI Safety, marking an important institutional commitment to addressing the societal, ethical, and technical challenges associated with increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems.

The Centre will provide a focal point for interdisciplinary research, policy engagement, and educational activity, bringing together expertise from across the University’s three Faculties. Its work will centre on developing frameworks and evidence to support the design, deployment, and governance of safe, responsible, and trustworthy AI.

By creating a dedicated hub for collaboration, the initiative aims to strengthen dialogue between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers while ensuring that advances in AI innovation are aligned with public interest and long term societal benefit.
